Is a sun shelf worth it?

For a Florida family pool, yes, and it is not close. The shelf is where the loungers go, where the umbrella goes, where the toddler splashes and the dog stands, and in August it is the only part of the pool half the household uses.

The design questions that matter: depth (six to twelve inches, and pick it for how you will use it), size (big enough for two loungers means saying so before the shell is designed, not after), and whether a bubbler joins it to keep water moving and cool.

A shelf is gunite geometry, sprayed as part of the structure. It is close to free at design time and genuinely expensive as an afterthought, which is the story of most pool features. You will see yours, furniture and all, in the 3D design before we break ground.
